Series Overview
The Antiracist School Leader: What to Know, Say, and Do by Dr. Daman Harris articulates a big-picture framework and research-based actions for antiracist education in school culture and curriculum. Current and aspiring education leaders will deepen their knowledge, strengthen their skills, and lead their staff toward more equitable outcomes for students and families.
This professional learning series, based on Dr. Harris’s 2023 book, takes readers from initial commitment and vision casting to strategy implementation and impact evaluation. The operating assumption is that participants recognize the need for antiracist education. These sessions are designed to help participants support colleagues in acknowledging that need and creating actionable next steps for fulfilling it.
Series Outcomes
- Review essential information and history regarding antiracism in education, as well as key vocabulary terms and definitions.
- Learn how to plan, assess, and execute a comprehensive antiracist school vision.
- Gain ideas for connecting instructional opportunities to students’ lived experiences and monitoring the strategies’ impacts.
- Consider professional learning experiences toward achieving critical consciousness among educators in the school community.
- Identify concrete, research-aligned next steps for growing as antiracist leaders and continually instilling schools with racial literacy.
Session Outline
Each session highlights key components of two chapters.
Session 1. Committing to an Antiracist School Vision: In this session, we will describe how school leaders recognize the roles that school policies and practices play in reinforcing systems of oppression that lead to disproportionate racial outcomes. You will consider how school leaders can assess the antiracist readiness of their staffs and themselves to determine entry points that support everyone’s learning. You will consider strategies, visuals, and communication practices that antiracist school leaders can use to communicate with stakeholders.
Session 2. Plan Professional Learning Experiences & Embrace Resistance: You will learn how to use backward design to create goals, strategies, activities, and milestones. You will consider options for developing assessments that help to monitor short-, intermediate-, and long-term progress. This session also provides current and aspiring antiracist school leaders with strategies to recognize resisters, understand their triggers, and prescribe responsive measures.
Session 3. Elevate Antiracist Curriculum, Instruction, and Evaluation: This session describes how educators can present educational opportunities that are connected to their students’ lived experiences and how they should be prepared to confront issues related to race and language. You will learn how to audit processes related to curricula selection, instructional practices, stakeholder relationship building, staff evaluation, and other aspects of teaching and learning. You will also identify options for building a system of ongoing assessment to gauge the clarity of your plan and effectiveness of your strategies.
